Potential Jobs After Oracle SOA Training

There is a career fair happening at PWTC KL at the time I'm writing this blog post. It reminds me when I was still unemployed, really missed those good old days while doing job hunting. Anyway, my job hunting experience is rather different than any one else. I never attended any proper interview, one day I set an appointment to meet this person in charge of the company, the next thing I knew, I was offered the job. So far, I never rejected any job offering and I'm not looking for a new one at the moment.

After a week of learning all there is from the SOA/ADF Oracle training, I found this job advertised by a big multi-national company that matches what I have learned so far. Before I write about it more, I wanted to share with you some screenshots of what I've learned from the Oracle training I attended, here you go:

Oracle SOA Sample Tutorial

What you see above is a screenshot of Oracle Jdeveloper tool in designing a work flow of a credit card process. At first, following the step by step instruction in the tutorial was easy. Not until the end part when you have to test to see if the work flow application you've just created could run or not. It was sort of a relief when it run successfully. But when you see an error message appears, there is where you start to scratch your head opening up every little components which you've thought was so simple and realized it has become so complex. It's like doing math problems during school but with some visuals added to it. For those people who loves the challenge, this is an ideal job for you. I can't really say it is for me although I do like it once in a while.

Oracle Enterprise Manager Dashboard

This is a view of Oracle Enterprise Manager. It's a heavyweight application which I believe involves BEA Weblogic application server. My laptop couldn't take that application therefore I had to connect to the instructor's laptop to view. If you are familiar with online dashboard, PHPmyadmin or others, you'll get the hang of it. All of these activities I've shown to you requires a lot of 'experiencing'. It's not something you could just read and digest. So if you are lazy 'doing' but love to just 'read', this is not something for you. I love experimenting (up to a level where I don't see too much disappointing error messages) so this might be a suitable task for me.

Alright, enough about my ranting, here is the job description of a Oracle BEA Weblogic Portal Consultants:

So I guess my only option at the moment is to work closely with my company to maybe provide services for this role. Although my boss would not probably give me triple salary earning, at least I can still make use of what I have learned so far.

By the way, the product line my company is selling can be used with BEA Weblogic server. I think I'll try and find some time to fiddle around with that one first. Hope you get an insight of what my job is at the moment.

Attending Oracle SOA Training

What a great way to start the month of November with a fresh week of training. I can't really remember when was the last time I went for a week long training. The closest I went to was attending the Oracle Demand Generation Training at Sunway Hotel last September. As you've guessed it, lately I've been exposing myself a lot to Oracle. The way I see Oracle is that if MySQL open source database is a normal compact car where everybody can buy, Oracle database is a luxury car where only people with a lot of resources can afford to buy. The function is generally the same, it gets you to point A to point B but the features, performance and the experience are entirely different.

It doesn't really matter which product is the best or not, it is a matter of preferences. If I can afford to buy a BMW, I would definitely owned one. Unfortunately, I can only afford a basic car at the moment but I can still dream of a BMW nevertheless. Back to my Oracle training of course. The training was held at Oracle's HQ up in Level 38, Menara Citibank Kuala Lumpur. Check out their front desk:

I can only wish I am working with a huge corporation such as Oracle. It must be really tough trying to score a job there, don't you think?

Anyway, my trainer is a guy name Sachin, I am guessing he's from India from his thick Indian accent. Prior to this training, I have no idea what SOA or the longer version Service Oriented Architecture means. Even after reading Wikipedia, I still couldn't picture what SOA is all about. My trainer tried to give some clue on what SOA is all about but all I see is a bunch application pool represented by jargon linking with each other. I must give credit to Sachin although his presentation was a bit bored, he's quite a tech nerd when it comes to hands-on training which came in late in the afternoon since the Oracle JDeveloper installation file was almost 1GB and had to be copied manually from person to person. The requirement was 3GB of RAM for the training laptop just for the VMWare containing the SOA suite to run while I only have 1GB of RAM. Lucky there was an alternative.

The training class became more livelier when the hands-on approach began. With Nescafe coffee served, it was very enjoyable to crunch the tutorials given. Right up until my developed SOA scripts got corrupted and could not be deployed apart from the wireless networking changed setting. The journey continues tomorrow morning.

Systems Analyst Job Role

World's Greatest Systems Analyst

Since doing sales job is not one of my strongholds, I've always been interested to become a systems analyst. It may sound geeky but it is something that I like to look upon. Nevertheless, since I don't have a diploma or degree in IT or Computer Science, I'd better stick with becoming at least an engineer role such as a web engineer role.

I just wanted to share with you some notes that I've gathered on what a job of a systems analysts is all about:

What are the responsibilities of the systems analysts?

Here are some of the responsibilities that System Analysts are expected to deliver:

  • Conduct technical feasibility studies, evaluate user requirements and recommends solutions and resolve issues.

  • Design, analyse and code programs for system development according to user specifications.

  • Support user testing and be responsive to user queries, request for assistance.

  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle (SDLC) including requirements study, analysis, design, coding, testing, documentation, implementation and user training.

What are the types of knowledge and skills possess by the systems analyst?

Knowledge and skill needed to be possessed:

  • Up-to-date with the latest IT in specific areas of their scope

  • A keen determination in problem solving

  • Excellent communication skills with various level of management level

How are these knowledge and skills acquired by the systems analyst?

Knowledge and skills is normally acquired:

  • During on-going job, tasks and projects

  • Daily routine of work and communication internally and externally

  • Internal training by senior personnel and top management

  • Own effort of obtaining the latest information

Are the knowledge and skills possessed by the systems analyst adequate for him to perform his responsibility effectively?

Knowledge and skills are hard to be determined whether it is adequate or not. It is all depend on the individual performing their responsibility and the motivation and drive that they have.

If you are a job seeker, hope this information would be a good guide for you.

Selamat Hari Raya 2009

It's 5am in the morning right now. Woke up earlier since I realized I have some stuff needed to be done online. Anyway, today's Hari Raya is slightly different. I was forced to take 3 days of leave since the company is closing down for a week. There were some miss communication within the company regarding the leave and the annual bonus but basically this year, nobody is guarding the office unlike last year's.

This year, not a single physical Hari Raya greeting card for me since I never sent one to anyone. Most probably because people are saving up for other stuff. The price of goods has risen drastically over a year and the economy for most people doesn't look that good. Myself included I supposed. So, SMS wishes and Facebook are now the preferred option nowadays.

This year's Raya would be my final year celebrating it as a single guy. Next year, hopefully I'll be celebrating Hari Raya with my future wife or if lucky a child as well. There are also plans for next year's Hari Raya, I would be celebrating it elsewhere instead of being stuck in KL all these years.

Okay, here's my Hari Raya digital card for this year's Hari Raya 2009:

Have a nice Hari Raya celebration, drive save and happy holiday!

Oracle Demand Generation Training @Sunway Resort Hotel

Yesterday, I had the privilege to be part of a sales training at Sunway Resort Hotel next to Sunway Pyramid. The event was organized by ECS Pericomp together with Oracle. I did some Googling and found out that ECS Pericomp was just appointed as Oracle’s Value Added Distributor last month. Since the company I work with is a partner in some other products they are representing, they’ve invited us to come for this event. Becoming a business partner is not an easy task, my guess is they are looking for alliances with the others for them to achieve their sales target. Basically, leveraging on other people’s contacts, time and energy is the best way to kickstart their venture I supposed.

I wished the event was held after the fasting month, this was because I could have enjoyed the drinks and meal that were provided. ;-) Anyway, since I arrived at the place early (The event was supposed to start at 9am but the majority of the people invited only came in at around 10pm), I’ve gotten myself one movie voucher at Cathay Cineplexes (Thanks ECS).

4 years ago, I had the opportunity to come an Oracle event also at Sunway. You can refer to my blog post here. That was like a long time ago when I was just started off in the technology area. Bringing back the memory, I wrote that I was going to get an IT degree. Well that didn’t happen because it was just too expensive at that time. My mother just last week asked me whether I did think about continuing my studies because my younger brother had plans for it. I replied to her that I wanted to get married first and later on think about it. Then again, what can I gain if I pursue for further studies when all I can get is a better paying job. The question remains, is it a fulfilling one?

Enough about my ramblings, let’s move on to my sales training yesterday. The title of the training was “Oracle Partner Demand Generation Training”. Confused? Me too. It sounded like a name of product but its not. The trainer was a guy from Oracle, Nick Tielman. Before that, we had the Oracle channel’s manager giving a brief of what how Oracle company and product doing these days.

Getting back to the training session. Nick did a great job at presenting his presentation. I really like the first part which is the Goal Setting. That is one aspect that most of us or mainly me neglect the most. The rest is just like the usual sales training but from the aspect of technology industry which I also found is interesting considering I haven’t been on a sales training for a very long time. Anyway, relating this training to my job. I wear many hats in the company that I work with. I can still recall the time when I was a telemarketer and failed badly (this was before I landed at this job right now), it was one of the most difficult job I had ever done. I never enjoyed a moment of it.

Basically what Nick presented was a refresher course for me. However, I love the part where the Customer Relation Management system usage that Oracle themselves are using. I’ve implemented an open source CRM but hardly use it. There’s no harm in trying after learning all of what the sales training has provided, right?

By the way, Nick is from the Oracle application business development unit and what he had said about Oracle’s product is fairly true, with all the 60 acquisitions within 4 years and humongous amount of applications under Oracle’s umbrella, there is no way a salesperson could remember all of them. What they can do is basically get the ball rolling by bringing in pre-sales, consultant and tech-guys into the picture before getting the sales transaction completed.

What I saw yesterday was only just to sell Oracle’s product as if it was a box of software being presented to the customer and we need to close the deal as fast as we can. I am more into looking on how the implementation and services that we can provide because a lot of the clients that I’ve seen doesn’t have a clue on how to operate the software. Apart from that, the services and implementation area are more profitable rather than making a small percentage of profit margins of the product itself. By doing that way, the cash flow business can be sustained longer and the effort can be justified. I am just writing what come into the top of my head here.

Anyway, the sales training is a good approach in knowing what Oracle businesses is. I wonder if entering into Oracle University would be a good move for me. I guess I’ll have to look more into it as I reorganize my own personal goal.

Blogging From A Cybercafe Nearby My House

I have like less than 15 minutes before my 1 hour in this cybercafe ends. I guess it has been a couple of years I haven't visit any cybercafes. I normally used to be online whether at home or anywhere on my own laptop. BTW, I'm waiting for my motorbike to be fixed next door.

The feeling blogging in a cybercafe is different. My paranoid is the leak of my private information such as my username and password. Another is this filthy keyboard. I'm guessing it has a lot of germs and bacteria coming from all those kids using this computer. Oh dear, I'm definitely disinfecting my hand when I get back home.

Next, I want to prove that without any special software I can still upload and publish a decent image. Check this out:

The Little Brother of Mercedes Benz E-Class

Today I want to show you something interesting I saw a couple of month ago. I've never seen such creativity and such an awesome inspiration or motivation. When I first saw this, I was flabbergasted (loved this word):

Pocket Raincoat

I figured I update my blog today on the first day of fasting of the year. I found this product at Mydin USJ. I wonder if anybody is using it.

It has been an occasionally rainy day the past few weeks. I reckon this would make a perfect gifts for the kids apart from the surgical mask to prevent the flu. Don't you think so?

Youth 2009 @ PWTC

Right after I took my CIDB Green Card course, I took the LRT Train from Chan Sow Lin straight to PWTC. It was unfortunate for me since I went there alone. Anyway, pictures tell you a thousand words:

Getting My CIDB Green Card

This entry is 6 months behind what I was supposed to blog. Anyway, I just need to get it off my draft page and publish it on my blog. I don't know why I am so lazy to blog these days but I'll give it my best to clear off all of my pending writings. Here it goes.

CIDB or the Construction Industry Development Board requires any personnel who is or will be working in any consctruction site to have a green card. This is to ensure every personnel is covered, sort of like an insurance or license to be in any construction site. My company has a major project in one construction site installing network cables and IT equipment. Although I only went there like one or two time only, I still need to be covered. So last January 2009, my HR department sent me to get my own green card just in case if I were needed to be sent to any construction site I supposed.

The class was done on a Saturday. This is where the place is located:

The Akademi Binaan Malaysia

The place is next to the LRT Star Station Chan Sow Lin station. So if you don't want to drive there, just take the LRT. If you drive there, the parking is free. No sweat.

The Green Card Program

My class speaker

The speaker was fun to listen to. I wasn't bored throughout his entire presentation. He was interactive with all of his audiences although I am guessing half of the class didn't really understand his Malay languange (only 5 or 6 people in the class were Malaysian, the rest are all Indians, Viatnamese, Nepal or Indonesian). I really like what he is presenting. The most interesting part is when he includes his past experiences being a safety inspector.

CIDB Guideline Mini Booklet

This book was given complimentary of CIDB. It's a nice booklet, less text and more illustration. During the end of the class, I received the construction helmet which is now being displayed on top of my closet collecting dusts. BTW, it is an offence leaving your construction helmet in your car.

That's all for today. Will write again soon.

A Quick June 2009 Update

It's been almost 3 months since my last update. I have been blogging less and less this year. My blogging momentum seems to be slipping away. I also haven't been logging into my blog for a while. When I do, I can see this:

Spam in June 2009

Let me see what I've left out on this blog, I have a list of things in my head to write about but too lazy to type it using my keyboard. I'll try and seek a time to write more often. Anyway, here's a really good quote I've found:

"We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing. "

Have nice weekend today!

Raw Unedited Video Footage of Citrawarna 2009

This year is my third year in a row attending the Colours of Malaysia or Citrawarna 2009. Unlike last year at Putrajaya, this year's Citrawarna was held at Dataran Merdeka in the heart of KL City. The different of this year's Citrawarna compared to last year was the number of dancers that were invited to participate. From about 1,600 dancers last year, only 800 dancers participated in this year's Citrawarna 2008. Even Laadvamore didn't make it in becoming one of the dancers this year so she wasn't so happy about it. Some of her friends did make it but most likely their pay was cut in today's economic downturn. The crowd this year was far less than last year at Putrajaya.

Anyway, I managed to borrow my father's digital video camera and recorded footage of Citrawarna 2009 from an amateur point of view. I don't really like spending my time editing videos so I've converted and uploaded the longest unedited video footage available on the camera. I'll try and finish off the rest if I remember to do so.

Anyway, enjoy this half an hour raw unedited footage of Citrawarna 2009 uploaded on Vimeo (Youtube can only cater for 10 minutes plus it's being blocked at various places). The fireworks were really awesome!!

Will definitely come again next year for the awesome fireworks display as usual!

My 2008 Re-cap

Just when I thought I should write my last blog post for 2008, it’s 2009 already? I actually owe my blog a couple of blog posts. I’ve been thinking about blogging for the past several weeks now but the excuse is not about busy doing other stuff but the lack of putting my thoughts into written words and actually posting it. Anyway, 2008 has been a rollercoaster ride for me personally, my career, my finance, my romance and also with my family. I’ve put together some brief highlights of what had happen in my life the past 12 months in 2008.

Thaipusam day was in January this year. Apart from lots and lots of meetings, I now have a permanent workplace at my office. Had one visit to JB followed by a client meeting the next day. It was quite a hectic month. I cash out my first Adsense earning. I wrote a blog post about my car being service at Fasfik. Fasfik apparently was too ambitious to expand but couldn’t cope with the growth therefore forced to shut down their entire operation where I’ve seen. Too bad since I really like their services.

Started off the month with my cousin’s birthday. My cousin was supposed to have her wedding later that month but moved it earlier since the announcement of The National Election Day. Election fever was on this month. Casted my first vote since I missed the last one. I went to MISA at Putrajaya for free. There was a plan my company sending me to Washington for a conference and business partner meeting. So I made my international passport and my 6 months validity US visa just to find out that my company’s budget had to be cut down thus making my trip being cancelled the next month.

I also received a couple of e-mails and chats from people with also bought the same laptop most of them asking for Windows XP drivers which was hard to find since it’s a Windows Vista configured. Wrote about my third or last visit to Fasfik. It’s also a dancing month, one at Cineleisure Damansara and another at Citrawarna 2008.

I started my second job this month teaching English for UPSR student at a tuition centre this month, the pay wasn’t so great but at least it is still extra money and the job wasn’t so difficult. Two days after that, the petrol price increased sky-high. I managed to find a petrol station with less queue after running around seeing petrol stations being flocked by motorists. My full tank of fuel didn't last long, the next day I went to Batu Pahat to conduct a Joomla Administration training at UTHM. Luckily the trip was claimable. Within the same week, I finally, made use of my international passport by visiting Singapore with my company team. It opened my eyes a little bit seeing things for myself rather than seeing it on a laptop screen (I need more travelling this 2009). Heard about BarCamp KL but didn’t really understand what is it about at that time. There were 2 tender bidding activities was quite hectic as I had to squeeze my brain doing a lot of paperwork.

It was a wedding month with so many wedding I had attended the past several weeks earlier. My mum’s birthday is this month. My girlfriend decided to style her hair and tried hair rebonding at Sungai Wang where I had to wait for 5 hours for her while doing the process. Luckily Low Yatt Plaza was just next door so I spent most of my time there while waiting but it was a waiting endurance for me. I also went to an Advertising Career Program talk which was quite interesting and the moment which I was looking forward for the past 1 month, BarCamp KL Malaysia 2008.

Had my car serviced at a new car service centre which apparently I found out was a bit overpriced for a car like mine. My brother’s wedding is this month, one in Kuala Terengganu and the other in KL. Being the 'Best Man' is unpleasant if you are single and making it worse, the bridegroom is your younger brother. Found out that Maxis Wireless Broadband in Kuala Terengganu was quite fast. Discovered a blogger friend of mine LadyAzurt in a car magazine. Being approached by a market research firm through my girlfriend’s friend father. Brought home 5 audio products to be tested for 2 weeks and got paid for it. It was so much fun.

It’s a fasting period this month. Activity tend to be slowed down but not entirely. Tried a Soft Fish Spa at a shopping mall nearby my house.  This kind of fish spas are popping up all over shopping malls I’ve been to. I watched Wall-E, the best animated movie I’ve ever seen. Went to one seminar about currency trading. You can really make (or lose) some serious money with just a laptop with an internet connection. My company’s software principle from Boston USA came down to Malaysia and did a seminar talk about a really long title which I had to shorten it to explain it to the invitees. After 4 years working with his software solutions, I finally had a chance to met the founder. The guy is really huge. Just look at the size of him compared to me (picture below). Anyway, the “buka puasa” food at Marriot was awesome.

October 2008

Its Hari Raya month. A point where I started to slow down on my blogging (only 2 blog posts this month). My family was infected with a flu that caught almost everyone except me. I spent most of my time in my room reading stuff about a newly found area that could definitely replace my struggling ‘poor cash’ career. I guess I really am an information junkie after all. 18th of October was my birthday. I celebrated my birthday at Semenyih with my parent’s friends family since there were 2 other person celebrating their birthday the same as I am.

This month I went to one seminar, one presentation meeting and a couple of webinars. I also had my first visit to Hospital Selayang for a check up on a lump on my neck. I also bought a 2nd hand HTC Touch from my father.

My second check up was up after the first one. This time it was a CT Scan on my neck. The blog post is still in my draft box. I’ll try and finish off that blog post as soon as I can. Later after that, there was a conference at Sheraton Subang Hotel where I had to attend my company’s showcase booth. I also traded in my Maxis Wireless more than 1 year old ZTE modem for a new USB package. That didn’t work out very well, traded that one back to Maxis and went for a Maxis Broadband Wireless power package. On top of that, I’ve added a new subscription for DiGi Internet Mobile Access for my HTC Touch. I’ve been quite happy with DiGi Internet connection so far eventhough its not as fast as Maxis or Celcom. I helped out Laadvamore bought her new Lenovo Ideapad S10 netbook. Its so light, full functionality and gorgeous looking. More detail blog post on these coming up soon.

December 2008

My laziest blogging month of all. I only wrote one blog post about my treatment experience at Hospital Selayang and that’s only part 1. Part 2 is still lying around in my draft box. I serviced my car again this month (owning a car carries a lot of liabilities). Nothing unusual happened in December. I am however looking for ways to supplement my income though. I’ll probably write about it if I can find time for it.

That’s wrapped up my year in 2008. Looking forward for a more prosperous year in 2009.
